Bullies
What is your first impression when you hear the word “bullies”? Well, most of you must be thinking of several elephantine figures who tower menacingly above the puny, low self-esteemed adolescence and radiate fear, turmoil and suffering to the public.
What is defined as bullies? Bullies are a group of individuals who feel that they are in a league out of the general population and would cause great suffering to their victims just to prove that perceived fact. They often harbour bitter feelings against a group of students or just one victim and would find every possible way to make his or her life as miserable as they can. Cruelly toying with their victims, these bullies seem to get a great deal of satisfaction and joy from the immense physical and mental suffering being inflicted to their victims. To these heartless beasts, their victims are often a seen as a source of irritation and a an opportunity to display their most creative punishments.
Although they seem to be high and mighty, these bullies are not completely perfect. They, too have a weakness. Bullies portray themselves as strong and intimidating foes ,often putting up a united front. But this illusion is just a façade, a cover for their weakness, fear and inferiority.
It seems that there is an abundance in the number of bullies in every community. They are like weeds, which require a tedious and taxing amount of effort to eradicate but they always seem to return after some time. Though there are bullies in different parts of the world, they all share a common trait, superiority complex. Superiority complex, is a subconscious desire developed by the individual as a result of feelings of inferiority. These feelings of inferiority are often brought about by real or perceived social rejection. When one possesses the superiority complex, they perceive themselves as a class higher than their victims and have an exaggeratedly positive opinion of their worth. These bullies require attention, power and a chance to permeate fear to their victims so that they can experience being of greater value compared to their victims and feel superior for the first time in their pitiful life. Also, individuals with such a mentality often come stick in groups. This is to ensure that the victims have no chance whatsoever to stand up against them.
But what do their victims experience? Sheer suffering and turmoil. The victims have to undergo cruel treatment and face the wrath of bullies. These painful experiences are etched in their memories forever and may even lead to a change in their character. Some may never get up from the unforgettable experiences and feel great about themselves due to the relentless name-calling and insulting verbal criticism being hurled at them by bullies. Sadly, these victims have to endure such unimaginable torment and will be scarred for life all because of the great deal of satisfaction the bullies acquire which is short-lived.
Most of the these heinous acts are done by teenagers in their schools. The bullies single out a victim from the mass crowd who has does things they deem weird. These victims are often the bookworms and tiny sized teenagers who almost look like toddlers and have little or no knowledge of how to protect themselves and stand up towards them. Thus, the bullies get a feeling of invincibility and eternal reign over the weak victims who are unable to fend for themselves.
Also, there seems to be an increasing trend of teenagers capturing their acts of violence and cruelty on their victims on recordable devices which are readily available in the market and uploading them onto the internet. These bullies simply just want fame, acknowledgement of their superiority from the world and justification of their savage acts. After a while, that happiness disappears like the wind and their thirst for dealing immense pain returns.
But, the most important thing is, what can schools do to prevent such acts of monstrosity from occurring? Teachers can have a one to one talk with the bullies to try to change their perception and guide them back on the right path when they have knowledge that such incidents happen.
But most of the time the victims are too afraid to tell their teachers and save themselves from the cruel reign of these bullies as they fear the enraged monsters would vent their increased anger and increase the intensity of their acts of violence. Sadly, though the school is heavily guarded and watched by the teacher’s eagle eyes, some actions often slip through their watchful eye. Also, though the school has immense control over the students, they have no power outside the school premises. Thus, many a times, the acts of bullying done by bullies on their victims are left uncaught and the bullies escape scot-free, leaving the pitiful victims with unforgettable and painful memories of their schooldays.
